Sapporo city

Area : 1,121 km2
Population : 1,894,344 peoples ( as October 1. 2007 )

Sapporo is a northernmost large city in Japan.
Sapporo is in Hokkaido Island. This sapporo is central of Hokkaido.

The history of this city starts in 1857. It is a new city in Japan. Therefore, the city is made from a new city planning. The Japanese says that Sapporo looks like the city in Europe and America.

Origin of City's Name
The name of Sapporo is said to be derived from Ainu language "Sari-Poro-Pet" (River lined with large reed bed) or "Sat-Poro-Pet" (Large dried-up river).

Climate
Sapporo is characterized by four distinct seasons, including a cool summer and cold, snowy winter.

Beautiful days continue from April to June, when the city is filled with lush, green vegetation and blooming flowers. Although it becomes hotter in the daytime from late June, Hokkaido has no rainy season, unlike elsewhere in Japan. The height of summer is between July and August, with average temperatures sometimes exceeding 20 degrees.

In September, temperatures drop with each rainfall and the precipitation increases as autumn deepens. The leaves begin to change color in October and the temperature sometimes approaches 0 degrees. The first snowfall usually occurs in late October. From early December onward, the ground is continuously covered with snow.

The maximum snow depth between December and February can reach up to approximately 1 m, and the annual cumulative snowfall is about 5 m. The average temperature in January is -3 degrees. It becomes warmer in March and the average temperature exceeds 0 degrees around the time of the Vernal Equinox. Ice and snow covering the ground typically begins to melt in early April.

Sapporo's average temperature is about 8.5 degrees and the annual precipitation is about 1,100 mm.

He came back to Sapporo, and call his friends in his school.
His dream was achieved in 1992. A lot of Sapporo citizens cooperated in him. Only ten team first time in 1992. Dancers were 1000 people. However, their dances gave the citizens happiness.
The small dance at that time surprises the world now. The participating teams in 2008 were 330 teams. Dancers were 33000 people. Spectators were two million people.

The Sapporo Snow Festival, one of Japan's largest winter events, attracts a growing number of visitors from Japan and abroad every year.
Every winter, about two million people come to Sapporo to see the hundreds of beautiful snow statues and ice sculptures which line Odori Park, the grounds at Community Dome Tsudome, and the main street in Susukino.
For seven days in February, these statues and sculptures(both large and small) turn Sapporo into a winter dreamland of crystal-like ice and white snow.
