| Story of Pavona |
In Faenza lived a very famous man who name is Galeotto Manfredi. He belonged
to the family who was in command and he was himself a soldier, he took
part in many battles and in the end he overthrew his own brother and became
the leader. Galeotto was married but had a lover too, a beautiful woman
who was nicknamed Pavona. For this reason people said that this ceramic
decoration was named after Galeotto's lover! Also, Galeotto was killed
by his wife who was very jealous.
Of course it is difficult to know for sure if the Pavona decoration was
named after Galeotto's lover, but I think it's a funny story to tell anyway! |

Gaetano Ballardini is a founder in this museum.
There was in fact an international exhibition dedicated to Evangelista
Torricelli who is a famous scientist, although he was not born in Faenza,
he spent here almost all his life.
During the Second World War, in 1944, the museum was almost destroyed by
the bombs. Mr. Ballardini devoted all his efforts to the recostruction
of the collection of ceramics and was helped not only by the people of
Faenza and the rest of Italy, but also by a lot of people from abroad. |

| "Torrone" |
|
|
|

|
|
| Torrone is a traditional sweet of Italy. The Italian people eat Torrone
when celebrating. Moreover, a big festival of Torrone has been held in
various parts of Italy every year. Please eat when you come to Italy. |
|
| From Claudia |
|
I'm going to tell what happens in Faenza on December 8th. This is a religious
festivity which is celebrated all over Italy, but in Faenza we also celebrate
Torrone, so even if the real name of the festivity is Festa dell'Immacolata
Concezione (Immaculate Conception) for us in town it's Festa del Torrone.
There is a big market attended by many people, actually it gets so crowded
that it's almost impossible to walk, one just gets dragged by the river
of people... Although you can find any kind of goods at this market, many
stalls sell of course Torrone. It is a typical Italian Christmas sweet
and has very old origin. It's origins are not clear, maybe Arabs invented
it and brought it to Italy and Spain in the 16th century, maybe it was
invented in Italy as there is a legend stating that the first Torrone was
served on October 25th 1441 at the wedding banquet of Francesco Sforza
and Bianca Maria Visconti.
Torrone is made with the white of the egg, sugar, honey and almonds, so
it is very very sweet. There is hard and soft Torrone, and you can also
find different ingredients, for instance instead of almonds you can put
hazelnuts or pistachios, you can add different flavous or you can cover
it with chocolate. There is Torrone icecream and I can also make a delicious
dessert with it. |
|
|
|
|

| Traditional Torrone |
| Traditional Torrone is hardness to which teeth break. |
|
|

| Soft Torrone |
| This Torrone is soft. On Torrone, there is a dry fruit. |
|
|
|
|

| Various Torrone |
| Left Torrone is an orange taste. The right is a walnut taste. What Torrone
do you want to eat? I want to eat Pistachios first though I want to eat
everything. |
|
|

| Market of Torrone Festival |
| A lot of people gather in the market of the festival though it is cold
in December of Italy. In the Italy travel at this time, this is one viewpoint
and enjoyment. |
